Our compost is made from pig, chicken, cow and horse manures along with food waste, spent brewers grain and wood chips. It is turned and heated to kill pathogens and weed seeds and we have it tested through University of Maine. Click here for the latest test results. A well made compost will not be high in nutrients( ideally around 1-1-1) and you should add additional fertilizer based on soil tests. If you are looking for perfectly sifted compost, we are not your source. If you are looking for a diverse mix of base material and a vibrant, diverse compost biome we are your source. Our compost will energize your garden soil by providing bacteria, fungi and nematodes along with the carbon fuel to feed to them and your plants.
You will notice decomposed wood chips in mixed in with the compost. There are many advantages to these chips, especially as they have been have been part of the compost system from the beginning and are well broken down. Using fresh wood chips, although great as mulch, does tie up available nitrogen in the soil. Ultimately that nitrogen is released back to soil as the microbes break down the chips. Here is a great article on wood chips from UVM https://www.uvm.edu/d10-files/documents/2024-06/Wood_Chips_in_Vegetable_Production.pdf. Here is another article about using and the advatages of aged wood chips, https://www.mofga.org/resources/mulch/too-many-wood-chips/
