Food waste

Food waste

Using both wind rows and a composting unit, we are able to take in up to 15 tons of food scraps and biodegradable waste per week. Depending on the source, the food being diverted goes to feed our chickens first or it goes straight to the composter. Regardless of where it starts, it is mixed with other natural materials, aged properly, and eventually used on the farm to help grow food for our community to enjoy or sold to folks for use in their own gardens.

What we DO take:

Plate or kitchen scraps, basically anything that was or could be on your plate. Unbleached (whenever take possible) and unlined (or compostable) paper goods, think napkins, paper towels, and paper plates are all good. Coffee grounds, coffee filters, egg shells, corn husks, cheese rinds, and crusts off your sammies are all welcome. Compostable plastic cups and straws are also OK as are $100 bills.

What we DON’T take:

We don’t currently process raw meat, pet waste, or liquids. No non-compostable plastics or wax-coated paper goods of any kind. No hair, fur, dirty tissues, toenails, or any other biowaste (you can put that in your backyard pile, but we can’t take it at the farm).

Wish-Composting

You’ve heard of wish-cycling; well, we’re here to talk about wish-composting. The thing is, whether something will break down has everything to do with the composting system you’re putting into. But if you know the basics, you can be an informed consumer, buy things that make sense for our area’s current available composting system, and make choices that make sense!

Compostable plastics—are they really going to break down? When it comes to thin, transparent plastics, we can confidently say, "Yep! We got you." That means compostable bags, cups, and straws are all a go. Unfortunately, the jury is still out on compostable plastic flatware at the farm. That’s why we ask that you don’t bring it to us at this time.

When you can, grab your choice utensil from the drawer to wash and reuse, or buy bamboo flatware that breaks down easily.

Commercial: Business Pick- ups

Commercial: Business Pick- ups

We currently support businesses in Northern Grafton County, diverting thousands of pounds a week of food scraps and biodegradable waste. We offer pick-ups as often as four times per week, though once or twice a week is plenty for most of our customers. We can provide 4-gallon or 32-gallon bins (or both!) to accommodate different production levels. Critter deterrent locks (priced per lock) are available for customers who need to store their bins outdoors. Pricing is set by the number of pick-ups weekly.

Private: Farm Drop- offs

Private: Farm Drop- offs

For individuals or families looking to cut down on their monthly cost of town trash bags or just wanting to do the earth a solid and reduce the amount of biodegradable waste being sent to a landfill, we have a farm drop-off option! This option is free and available anytime during farm hours (8:30 a.m.- 5 p.m., 7 days a week), with a donation request for those who can afford it.

Help the farm and your community and consider giving $10/month to support Meadowstone Farm’s community compost program.
