We are thrilled to welcome you all to the first of 5 pickups for the Spring CSA. This CSA will provide you with Fresh greens, spring cold hardy crops, and the first fruiting crops of the season.
We have been busy the last few months prepping and planting gardens and greenhouses for short quick crops and season long crops along with everything in between.
9 greenhouses helps profusely when it comes to growing in northern NH. 5 of them are double layered, heated greenhouses, and 2 of these 5 have radiant heat to warm the soil. Unpredictable weather makes the spring incredibly challenging, however we have systems in place to ease the stress. This winter we created an overlap for the rollup sides to help insulate the plants and keep the heat in. Having wood, oil, and a backup heater in addition to an alarm system in case temperatures dip too low helps keep the stress at bay. When you come by to pickup your share, feel free to walk around and see what we have going on at the farm. The systems we have in place have enabled us to grow “tropical plants” even in the cold wet winter/spring conditions that are now over 7’ tall.
With the challenges of pest pressure, weed pressure, and the wet weather of last season, we are took a very thought out approach when planning for the upcoming season. For the first time in 5ish years, all of our onions are here at the farm versus the Oxbow, a 4 acre lot we lease right along the Ammonoosuc river, about 3 miles from the farm as the crow flies. After prepping the beds by hand and amending, we mulched with plastic, used composted horse manure in the pathways and planted. Redwing (red storage onion) and Patterson (yellow storage onion) take up most of the space, Ringmaster (sweet onion) reside in the rest of the bed space. We hope for a weed and pest free onion crop this season!
Another way we extend the seasons is through moveable greenhouses. Currently 3 greenhouses are moveable, meaning we can roll them from one section of a field to another. We can extend the season in both the spring and the fall seasons. In March and April we planted greens under the cover of the greenhouse and then once the weather warmed up the first week of May, we simply rolled the greenhouse to the next section where we will plant all those fruiting “tropical plants” we love: Tomatoes, cucumbers, and peppers. Check out the videos below to see greenhouses move and to learn more.
